From My Hands to a Paris Street: How a MALNI Bag Is Made

People ask me one question more than any other: is grape leather real leather? It’s a fair question, and I’d rather answer it honestly than sell you a story. So let me show you how a MALNI bag actually comes together — and why I make every design in two materials instead of picking a side.

It starts flat

Every bag begins as a flat piece of material and a paper pattern. For our vegan line, that material is VEGEA — a leather alternative made from the grape skins, stalks and seeds left behind after winemaking. The wine industry throws those away by the ton; we back them with a bio-based coating so they wear like leather. Our Italian-leather line starts somewhere else entirely: LWG Gold-certified hides from tanneries held to the highest environmental standard in the industry. Neither is a shortcut. Both are chosen on purpose.

Made by skilled hands

From there it’s cutting, skiving, folding, stitching and finishing. The stitching runs through professional machines — the same Dürkopp Adler sewing machines the finest leather houses rely on — guided by hands that have done it thousands of times. It is made in small runs, in a real workshop, not stamped out on a faceless production line. The hardware goes on last: the lock, the feet, the small gold details that catch the light. Then, and only then, is it a bag.

Why both materials

Most of this industry asks you to pick a tribe: leather purist or vegan believer. I won’t. Some days you want the lightness and the conscience of grape skin; some days you want the classic feel of Italian leather. I make both, I’ll tell you the honest truth about each, and I let you choose. That’s the whole idea behind MALNI — for the women who notice.
