The VEGEA Story — Luxury Vegan Grape Leather
The VEGEA Story
Luxury vegan leather, made from Italian wine.
Every Mariana Malni vegan bag begins as a grape. Specifically, the marc — the skins, stalks, and seeds left behind after pressing for Italian wine. What other industries discard, VEGEA transforms into one of the most credible luxury leather alternatives in the world.
What is VEGEA leather?
VEGEA is a patented vegan leather developed in Italy by Vegea S.r.l., a Milan-based biomaterials company founded in 2016. The material is created from vinaccia — the agricultural byproduct of winemaking that accounts for over 6 million tonnes of waste each year across Europe.
Through a proprietary process, this grape marc is dried, milled, and combined with bio-based polymers to create sheets of supple, durable, leather-like material that can be dyed, embossed, and worked just like traditional hides.
The result feels remarkably like premium calfskin in hand — but contains no animal hide, no chromium tanning chemicals, and no virgin plastic.
Why we chose it
When Mariana Malni was founded, we faced a question every emerging luxury brand confronts in 2026: how do you make beautiful objects without compromise?
Traditional leather requires animal agriculture, intensive water use, and chrome tanning — a process linked to higher cancer rates in workers and chemical pollution downstream. Most "vegan" leather alternatives are essentially PVC plastic, which sheds microplastics for decades after disposal.
VEGEA was the rare third option: a vegan leather that begins as agricultural waste, supports the Italian wine economy, and meets the tactile and aesthetic standards luxury demands.
PETA-Approved Vegan
Every Mariana Malni VEGEA bag is certified PETA-Approved Vegan.
- No animal-derived materials anywhere in the bag, including in adhesives and finishing agents
- No animal testing at any stage of material development
- Full traceability from raw material to finished product
This matters because the vegan luxury market has a credibility problem. Many brands market "vegan" bags that contain hidden animal-derived components in glues or lining treatments. PETA certification closes that loophole.

How VEGEA bags age
The most common question we receive about vegan leather is durability. Will it last? Will it crack? Will it look as beautiful in five years as it does today?
VEGEA's bio-based composition gives it a more stable molecular structure than petroleum-based vegan leathers. It resists cracking, doesn't peel, and develops a subtle softening over time — what we consider the vegan equivalent of patina.
Properly cared for, a VEGEA bag will outlast the trend cycles that drive fast fashion. We design for a decade of use, not a season.
Caring for your VEGEA bag
VEGEA leather is significantly more forgiving than traditional leather. To preserve it:
- Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove surface marks
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight — fade-resistant, but extended UV exposure dulls any luxury material
- Store in the cotton dust bag provided when not in use
- No conditioning oils required — VEGEA does not dry out like animal leather
- For deeper marks, a tiny amount of mild soap on a damp cloth works well
